For those of you who are new to the Knoxville area, you will want to know the ins and outs of the greenway.
I went on a lovely 4-mile jog today on the green way. I started at University gardens and ran down towards Calhouns. It is a flat, easy run passing between UT campus and the river. I would say the only problem with this run is construction. Since I have been in Knoxville it always seems that the greenway has been under construction. Most would say dodging bulldozers makes for a terrible run, but I look at it with a positive mindset. The city of Knoxville is allocating money to the betterment of Knoxville’s running community.
For beginner runners this is a great run along the river. It is flat, easy and there is usually a nice breeze.
Attached below is a website to visit if you are interested in embarking on a greenway adventure. Again, be aware of construction, but know that one day the greenway will genuinely be one of the greatest places to run in Knoxville.

Friday Night 5k “the hill”
Do you like running hills? How about running one massive hill two miles into an already fast paced 5k?
If you answered yes then oh do I have a race for you!
Friday Night 5k is a race put on by students from the University of Tennessee. The Race is unique in that it is run at night which adds a fun twist to the norm of 5k running. The other aspect of this race that makes it stand out from other races is the dreaded ‘hill’. Ask any UT student what the ‘hill’ is and they will give you the same general look of disgust. If you thought the hill was an obstacle between you and your biology class, imagine the pain it causes runners as they pass the mile 2 marker of an already fast moving race.
The ‘hill’ is the aspect of this race that separates the boys from the men.
I would advise beginner runners to stay far away from this race unless they like walking the last mile. I personally cant express in words the sadness my heart felt when my PR pace was tossed out the backdoor as I approached ‘the hill’ of no return.
Believe it or not I recommend this because of its challenging nature. Go big or go home!

The Boulevard
The Boulevard is to Knoxville as Rodeo is to Los Angeles, Broadway is to New York, and Michigan Ave. is to Chicago.
It is a road that serves a greater purpose then providing means to transportation. The Boulevard is part of Knoxville’s identity.
To a runner in Knoxville, it is even more then that. The beautiful dogwoods and rolling hills are only part of what makes the boulevard such an incredible place to run. Cherokee Boulevard has a great running path that is located along the road winding through parks right along the river. From end to end, the Boulevard is a little over 2 and ½ miles. This makes for a great 5 mile loop. The course is flat at first while winding adjacent to Sequoyah Park. The path then gets a bit more difficult as you approach a stretch of rolling hills. I would say that the 5 mile loop is difficult run for beginners, while being moderate for experienced runners. The boulevard is my personal favorite place to run in Knoxville and I would give it an 8 out of 10 on the K-Run scale.
To find Cherokee blvd. head west on kingston from the downtown area. Take a left at the 2nd light after Alcoa highway.
